Sustainable jet fuels from CO₂ by micro-algal cell factories in a zero-waste approach

WHAT IS ALFAFUELS?

ALFAFUELS is a Horizon Europe European project which seeks to develop innovative Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) technology to reduce aviation’s reliance on fossil fuels. By addressing key challenges like high production costs and sustainability issues, the project incorporates breakthroughs such as microbial fuel precursor production and solar-driven photochemistry.

ALFAFUELS aims to reach Technology Readiness Level 5, utilising novel bioreactors, pilot-scale trials, and industry collaboration for accelerated upscaling.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of ALFAFUELS is to enhance the upscaling potential of technologies for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) production from CO₂ through:

  • Technology Development: Innovate technologies for producing SAF, replacing fossil fuels and contributing to aviation decarbonisation.
  • Climate Change Mitigation: Capture and use CO₂ directly in the SAF production process to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change.
  • Energy Transition and Circular Economy: Engage in the energy transition by establishing a circular economy based on bioproducts and developing sustainable technological solutions across all SAF production stages.
