ALFAFUELS ACHIEVES TECHNICAL MILESTONE: FOREGROUND DATA LIFE CYCLE DATA INVENTORY

The ALFAFUELS project has successfully reached a significant milestone, advancing its mission to develop Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) using cutting-edge biotechnological processes. This milestone involved the creation of a comprehensive life cycle data inventory, detailing the inputs, outputs, and efficiencies across each stage of the SAF production system. The compiled data provides a critical foundation for assessing the system’s environmental and economic performance and supports the development of scalable solutions for future implementation.

This achievement represents a major step forward in integrating the key stages of the SAF production process. These include cultivating cyanobacteria and algae, extracting isoprene, and converting it into aviation fuel. By quantifying material flows and process efficiencies, the project has strengthened its ability to optimise resource use and address system challenges. Additionally, the milestone highlights the potential for repurposing valuable by-products, reflecting a strong alignment with circular economy principles.

Although the specific methodologies remain confidential, this milestone illustrates the successful collaboration among project partners to enhance transparency and establish a robust baseline for ongoing improvements. It also identifies critical data gaps, such as CO₂ capture efficiency and nutrient uptake, which will guide future efforts in refining and optimising the system.

This accomplishment aligns seamlessly with ALFAFUELS’ overarching objectives of producing environmentally sustainable SAF while employing a zero-waste, carbon-capture approach. It marks a crucial step towards transitioning from laboratory-scale innovations to industrial applications, ultimately contributing to global efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector.
