ALFAFUELS CELEBRATES ITS THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING IN GHENT

On 23 and 24 September 2026, the partners of the ALFAFUELS project met at KU Leuven’s campus in Ghent, Belgium, for the project’s third General Assembly. Researchers and industry experts from across Europe came together to review progress and plan the next steps towards a shared goal: producing sustainable aviation fuels from CO₂ using microorganisms such as cyanobacteria and microalgae, combined with sunlight-driven chemical processes.

On the first day, each team presented its latest results. These covered the full journey from the lab to future industrial production: improving the microorganisms that capture CO₂, turning their biomass into useful products without generating waste, scaling up the processes, and assessing their environmental and economic sustainability. In the afternoon, participants visited the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, a leading facility where new bio-based technologies are tested at larger scale.

The second day focused on teamwork and practical challenges. Partners took part in a workshop on how the project’s results can reach the market and benefit society, and in a technical session on measuring isoprene, one of the key molecules in the project. The group also toured KU Leuven’s laboratories, where partners were able to see the photoreactor developed by KU Leuven in the framework of ALFAFUELS project and the pilot brewery before closing the meeting.

The meeting confirmed the solid progress of ALFAFUELS and the strong collaboration within the consortium. The partners warmly thank KU Leuven for hosting and organising this successful gathering.
