ALFAFUELS SUPPORTS EUROPE’S PATH TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUELS

The European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation initiative is a key measure to accelerate the decarbonisation of air transport by increasing the uptake of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) across EU airports. As part of the Fit for 55 package, the regulation requires aviation fuel suppliers to gradually blend SAF into conventional aviation fuel, starting with a 2% share in 2025 and reaching 70% by 2050.

In this context, the ALFAFUELS project contributes directly to Europe’s aviation transition by developing innovative SAF technologies based on CO₂ utilisation. The project aims to reduce aviation’s reliance on fossil fuels by exploring microbial fuel precursor production, solar-driven photochemistry, novel bioreactors and pilot-scale validation, with the ambition of reaching Technology Readiness Level 5.

ALFAFUELS is especially aligned with ReFuelEU Aviation’s objective of boosting SAF innovation and investment across the value chain. By capturing and using CO₂ in the fuel production process, the project supports climate change mitigation while promoting circular economy approaches and sustainable technological solutions for future aviation fuels.

Through its research and industry collaboration, ALFAFUELS helps build the scientific and technological foundations needed to scale up next-generation SAF pathways in Europe, contributing to a more sustainable, resilient and low-carbon aviation sector.
