JET FUEL FROM CO₂? STUDENTS DISCOVER FUTURE ENERGY AT NATURAL SCIENCE WEEK
On March 5, 2025, students at Lundellska skolan in Uppsala were taken on a journey into the future of sustainable aviation during Natural Science Week. Pia Lindberg, Associate Professor in Microbial Chemistry at Uppsala University, delivered an inspiring talk titled “Jet fuel directly from carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight”. Her presentation introduced second-year high school students in the Natural Science programme to the cutting-edge research of the European project ALFAFUELS, which aims to transform carbon dioxide into renewable jet fuel using solar energy and biotechnology.
The presentation sparked curiosity and enthusiasm among the students, who explored how photosynthetic microorganisms and innovative reactors could one day help power airplanes while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Professor Lindberg’s talk connected complex chemistry with real-world applications in a way that made it both fascinating and accessible to a young audience. ALFAFUELS showed the students that science isn’t just about lab coats and equations – it’s about bold ideas that can shape a cleaner, greener future.
